Case Studies:: A Practical Look at GPL Solutions in Action

Wondering how GPL Solutions can assist you in your business? Take a look at some of the solutions we’ve provided for other customers:

Engine Room contacted us looking for help with the following:

+ We need more storage space
+ Our employees are working with different types of software, on different kinds of machines
+ Our whole post production process could stand to be a LOT more organized
+ We need ongoing support because we can’t afford any down time if something goes wrong

Can we help? Of course we can!

GPL Solutions mobilized a team to assess the situation and prepare an estimate and proposal for services.  We immediately stabilized the networked environment and took certain measures to ensure proper security on the part of the users, including implementation of a consistent password policy. After cleaning up the DNS and DHCP server, we tackled the documentation piece of the 3D workflow process.

First, we updated all render notes with consistent software and hardware, and then we created a methodology for migrating render notes to Linux. We then installed a Linux File Server to handle the required increase in storage, render power and additional workstations. This was followed by an upgrade in the increase of the network capacity of the existing Xserver with Xraid.

Once these increased storage solutions were in place, we implemented remote access software to enable remote support, virtually instantly.

The end result: A more organized and efficient post production process.

GPL Solutions Can Assist with Cross-Country Operations

When Lost Planet contacted us for assistance with improving IT communication and network throughput between their New York and Los Angeles offices, we were happy to provide our expertise.

The first step was to upgrade the company’s file server. We moved from an array of miscellaneous Windows-based machines to a Mac Pro. This alleviated cumbersome problems related to file naming – with the old setup, artists could not creatively name their files, and the company was unable to accept work from Partners unless the files were named under a specific convention that would be recognized by the old system. With the implementation of the Mac Pro, Lost Planet artists and partners are now able to name their files using any naming convention, allowing smoother integration of the 3D workflow.

Our next step was to migrate the client from an Exchange server, which was a single point of failure. Downtime will be virtually eliminated now that we’ve implemented a clustered email system, located in multiple co-location facilities. In addition to providing better up time, this shift also reduced the cost of software and consulting fees. We also created a transfer server during a system down, providing an additional backup venue that was not previously available.

Finally, we were able to increase network throughput between Lost Planet’s LA and NY offices by auditing the client site-to-site VPN policy.

The end result: Less downtime, lower operating costs, smoother integration and streamlined communication between bicoastal offices.

GPL Solutions Can Handle Smaller Jobs, Too

Intralink Films contacted us requesting assistance with a render farm setup in a Windows and Mac environment.

We added Linux Filer and tested thoroughly to ensure everything was working with all Mac and Windows applications.

We added Render Manager to streamline the 3D workflow. With Render Manager, artists could shift from rendering locally (a very time-consuming process) to managing their Maya and After Effects jobs directly from their workstations.

The end result: A more integrated and streamlined post production process.
